The Senegal Bichir is a living fossil with a lineage dating back over 400 million years. Also known as the “Dinosaur Fish” or “Dragon Fish,” this ancient species features an elongated, snake-like body, multiple small dorsal finlets, and the remarkable ability to breathe atmospheric air using primitive lungs. This air-breathing capability allows them to survive in low-oxygen environments.
Senegal Bichirs are nocturnal predators with a fascinating appearance and behavior. They have excellent senses of smell and can be surprisingly interactive with their owners. Although they can be kept with large tank mates, they are best housed in species-specific or carefully managed large aquariums due to their predatory nature.
Key Benefits:
- Unique prehistoric and dragon-like appearance
- Air-breathing ability (can survive low oxygen)
- Fascinating predatory and nocturnal behavior
- Hardy and relatively long-lived
- Impressive size and presence in large aquariums
- Interesting conversation piece for advanced aquarists
